Alvernia Edges Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Alvernia erased a two point deficit midway through the final quarter en route to an 82-74 win over Penn College in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday in Bardo Gym. The Golden Wolves improved to 1-0, while the Wildcats fell to 0-1.

Ben Sosa notched a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Penn College. Robert Young Jr. started his collegiate career with a team-best 23 points and four assists, and Mike Troutman finished with 12 points.

Calil Moultrie led all scorers with 24 points for Alvernia, Mike Miller added 22, and Alex Shippen finished with 19.

Penn College jumped out to a 14-10 lead on a Young trey with 14:37 left in the first half before the Wolves managed to even the contest at 18-18 with 10:33 on the clock. Alvernia led by as many as 16, 42-26, with 2:30 before the break but PCT end the half on an 8-0 run to head into the locker room trailing, 42-34.

The Wildcats erased a 10-point deficit with a 13-2 spurt early in the half to take a 47-46 lead on Mike Troutman's layup with 16:08 left in the game. That led to three more ties in the ensuing five minutes before Penn College took its final lead, 57-55, on a pair Young free throws with 10:49 on the clock. Alvernia responded with an 11-0 run and its lead never dipped below four the remainder of the game.

Penn College returns to action Friday, 5:30 p.m., against Grove City at Geneva College.
