NEWPORT, R.I. – Penn College dropped a 62-52 decision to Salve Regina in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday. The Wildcats fell to 1-8, while the Seahawks improved to 4-3.
Gwendolyn Lavelle and Ericka Lepley paced Penn College with 14 points each, while
Jane Herman finished with 10 point and eight rebounds. Tori Wolfe also grabbed eight boards for the Wildcats.
Kerri Beland led all scorers with 17 points for Salve and Tara Burke finished with 16.
The Seahawks took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter before the Wildcats opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to even the game at 15 on a Lepley three with 7:17 left before halftime. Cassi Kuhns added the other four points in the run for Penn College.
After Salve Regina regained a small lead, 17-15, Penn College answered with threes from Wolfe and Herman to lead 21-17, en route to a 23-22 halftime lead.
The Wildcats deadlocked the game for a final time, 28-28, on a Lavelle long ball with 8:19 left in the third before the Seahawks held a two-possession advantage the remainder of the period and led 45-40 at the end of the third.
Salve led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, while the Wildcats got as close as three, 55-52, on a Herman jumper with 59 seconds left in the game. The Seahawks iced the game by going 7 of 8 from the line in the final minute.
Penn College returns to action Sunday, 3 p.m., at Fisher College.
