Williamsport PA – Penn College returned to play Sunday to play two games with Alfred State. The Wildcats and Pioneers split the doubleheader. The split moves Penn Colleges record to 20-10 on year.
In Game One –
Penn College and Alfred State continued a game from earlier in the season that was rained out in the top of the third. Today's first game started with Penn College as the road team trailing 5-1. Picking up in the top of the third with the Wildcats at bat and runner at first.
Trevor Dolin would pitch for Penn College picking up where
Aaron Palmer left off.
Penn College quickly closed the gap scoring three runs in the top of the third.
Dylan Scaringi scored on a
Cole Hofmann double to left.
Ben Flicker reached after being hit by a pitch. Both Hofmann and Flicker would score on a two RBI double by
Evan Vigna to make the score 5-4.
The Wildcats added three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. All three of the Wildcats runs in the inning were unearned. The inning started with
James Simasek reaching on an error by the first baseman. Hofmann had the big hit of the inning when he drove in two runs on a single to center field. Hofmann would score the final run of inning on an error by the Alfred State third baseman.
The Pioneers would answer with two runs of their own to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fourth.
Penn College kept the runs coming in the fifth inning picking up a single run to retake the lead 8-7. The Wildcat run was again unearned. Both Simasek and
Noah Esposito worked the count for back-to-back walks to put runners at first and second. With two outs,
Nathaniel Lowe skied a ball to third base for what should have been the final out of the inning, but the third baseman had trouble tracking the pop up allowing Simasek to score on the error.
In the bottom of the sixth Alfred State used two Penn College errors to score two more runs for the final score of 9-8.
Cole Hofmann paced the Wildcat offense with three hits, three runs and three RBIs.
Dylan Scaringi added two hits and score two runs for the Penn College.
In Game Two –
Penn College never trailed to take game two 6-3. The Wildcats used a pair of three run innings to prove all the offense they would need to take game two.
Kyle Fox started the game on the mound for the Wildcats and pitched three strong innings before being ejected for arguing with the home plate umpire.
After a scoreless first inning, Penn College put three runs on the board in the second inning.
Eli Warren got the action started for the Wildcats when he was hit by a pitch. Warren would go on to score the first Wildcat run on an RBI single from
Dylan Scaringi.
Jed Blankenhorn scored the second run of the inning when he advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an error by the Alfred State catcher.
Cole Hofmann had RBI double to knock in the third Penn College run of the inning.
Alfred State responded in the top of the third scoring three runs to tie the game at 3-3. The Wildcats answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Penn College scored three runs in the inning without recording a hit. Three errors by Alfred State aided the Wildcat offense. The big play of the inning was a two-run error by the Pioneer shortstop.
Great relief pitching from Devin Sanders and Brad Walter kept Alfred State scoreless for the last four innings to preserve the 6-3 win the Penn College.
Cole Hofmann was once again the story offensively for the Wildcats going two for three with an RBI and a walk.
Jed Blankenhorn and
Dylan Scaringi both had well rounded games with a hit, run and RBI each.
Penn College returns to the field Wednesday, at Elmira College at 5:00 pm.
