READING, Pa. – Penn College broke a 0-0 deadlock with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, when an error plated the winning run, to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over Penn State Abington in the first round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs Friday.
Penn College will take on Penn State Berks Saturday, 8 a.m., in the winner's bracket.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Taylor Krow hit a single over the pitcher's head into center.
Taylor Brooks followed with a line drive single to center. After a second out,
Kassie Winters hit a shallow fly to center field that fell out of the fielder's glove, scoring Krow from second.
The Wildcats struggled to move runners in scoring position five times during the contest, including a runner on third twice. Brooks led off the game with triple to left but couldn't advance, and
Becky Schweikert (pinch running after
Elizabeth Asher's single) moved to third in the sixth but didn't get any further.
Brooks led the offense with three hits from the leadoff spot and also fired six innings of shutout pitching. She scattered two hits, struck out four and walked four.
Amanda Kustanbauter threw the seventh, allowing one hit and improved to 7-5.
