Baseball Closes out Myrtle Trip with a Split

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn College split its final two games during its Spring Break trip in Myrtle Beach.  The Wildcats were defeated by Bridgewater 25-0 before beating Wilkes University 7-4 to conclude their spring trip with an overall record of 3-5.

Against Bridgewater,
The Wildcats were only able to muster up four hits as they fell 25-0.  Cody Cline, Ben Flicker, Rylan Whitmyer and Eli Warren each collected a hit in the shutout loss.  D2 transfer Kyle Hasforth got the win for the Eagles as he scattered four hits over seven innings while striking out seven Wildcats.  Wildcats starter Max Bair saw his record fall to 0-1 on the season after giving up five runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Against Wilkes,
The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead against the Colonels before Wilkes answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth inning to go up 4-2.  Sophomore catcher Brittan Kittle had seen enough and continued his torrid spring trip with a blast to left to trim the Colonels lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth.  Kittle's home run seemed to spark the Wildcats offense as Colton Riley laced a double to left followed by a Richard Lennon RBI single which tied the game at 4-4.

The Wildcats took the lead for good in the top of the seventh.  Alex Zelger led the inning off with a double to left and would go on to score the Wildcats fifth run on a Ben Flicker RBI double.  The Wildcats added two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a Zach Kollar RBI single to right and a Colton Riley single to center.

Wilkes made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs against relief pitcher Nathan Holt.  Holt was able to induce a weak groundball to first base that ended the game.  Holt picked up his first collegiate win in relief of starter Cody Nelson.  With Nelson in some trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning and the bases loaded with nobody out, Holt was able to stymie the Colonels big inning as he got a fly out to right and a 4-6-3 inning ending double play.  Nelson gave up three earned runs in four innings of work while Holt went five innings limiting the Colonels to just three hits while striking out six.

Six Wildcats batters had multiple hit evenings with Cody Cline and Brittan Kittle leading the way with three apiece.
