WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Penn College swept Mansfield in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday evening and improved to 17-11. The Wildcats won the first game 5-2 and rallied in the nightcap to win 11-6 in six innings.
It was the first time in program history that Penn College beat Mansfield.
In game one,
Penn College scored three runs in the first two innings to back starter Devon Sander's pitching performance.
Sanders (3-0) got the start on the hill for the Wildcats and earned his third victory of the season pitching a six-inning gem. Sanders scattered five hits and just the two runs in the top of the 6
th inning. Sanders mixed his pitches extremely well and kept the Mountaineers off balance at the plate all outing long.
The Wildcats got things going offensively in the bottom of the first inning with two outs as
Brittan Kittle hit an RBI single to left scoring
Cody Cline. Kittle would go on to score off a
Colton Riley single to left.
In the bottom of the 2
nd inning, the Wildcats rallied again to score a run with two outs.
Alex Zelger ripped a double to left and score on a Cline single through the left side. Up 3-0 the Wildcats padded their lead with two runs in the bottom of the 4
th on a Zelger single down the left field line.
Zelger and Cline finished the game with two hits apiece while
Cody Nelson closed the game with a strike out on the mound.
In game two,
Penn College rallied from six runs down in the fourth, with one in the fourth and 10 in the fifth. The game was called due to rain after the top of sixth.
After the Mountaineers went ahead 6-0 in the fourth,
Deric Ellerman plated
Richard Lennon with single to right.
Then, Penn College opened up.
Kittle and Cline brought in four of the ten runs with two-run single by Cline and Kittle's two-run triple. Ellerman and Kittle also picked up RBI singles, while
Colton Riley drew a bases loaded walk, Zelger smacked a sacrifice fly, and error plated another run.
Cline, Flicker, Ellerman,
Noah Esposito, and Kittle all picked up a pair of hits.
Andrew Gilbert improved to 3-0 after 1.2 innings. He struck out three, walked two, allowed one run on hit.
