CINCINNATI, Ohio – Penn College picked up its first dual meet victory in a tri-meet split against Alma College and Mount St. Joseph's Thursday. The Wildcats improved to 1-6 after knocking off Alma, 32-16, and falling to MSJ, 36-13.
How It Happened: Against Alma College -- which is ranked No. 8 by InterMat (but unranked by NWCA) -- Penn College took a 12-3 lead after falls from
Ryan Bauer and
Lukas O'Connor at 133 and 141. Alma won the next three bouts to regain a 16-12 advantage before the Wildcats swept the final four matches.
Daniel Bergeron picked up a 16-1 technical fall at 174,
David Galasso made quick work with a pin in 48 seconds at 184,
Jared Mooney muscled out a 6-3 decision at 197, and the Wildcats received a forfeit at heavyweight.
Against Mount St. Joseph, after dropping the first two bouts,
Colin Jens used a third period takedown to pick up a 4-2 win at 141 and
Jesse Walker picked up a first period pin at 149. Penn College lost the next three matches before Galasso earned a 12-1 major decision at 184.
Outside the Box: "It feels nice to be on the winning end of a hard-fought dual," Penn College coach
Jamie Miller said. "We've lost a couple of those early in the year but the guys are making adjustments, picking up bonus points when we need them, and doing a great job of wrestling for the team. We are heading into the Gator Boot Duals a bit shorthanded with Gettys out of the lineup and a few other guys banged up so we're going to have to be creative with our lineup, but the coaching staff is really excited with the way we are wrestling right now."
