WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Twelve Penn College wrestlers competed at the Lycoming Invitational on Sunday, marking the team's season opener. Freshmen 125-pounder Sawyer Wolfkiel and 157-pounder Charley Paige both earned runner-up finishes in their collegiate debuts. Seven other Wildcats reached placement matches in the team's first action of the season.
Wolfkiel collected two pins and a technical fall to reach the 125B bracket final. He started the day with a second-period fall over Alfred State, earned a 16-0 technical fall in 5:26 against Lycoming in the quarterfinals and secured a pin in 6:12 over his Wilkes opponent in the semifinals. Wolfkiel's day ended with an injury default in 33 seconds in the finals.
Paige scored a 19-3 technical fall against Alfred State in the first round and a 19-4 technical fall in 4:06 against SUNY Oneonta in the quarterfinals. He also posted an 18-10 major decision against Wilkes to reach the 157B bracket final. He dropped a 4-0 decision to Alfred State to earn silver in his first collegiate tournament.
Freshmen 125-pounder Rowan Humphrey and 141-pounder Faris Kolenovic both went 1-2 in their debuts to place fourth. Ethan French also finished fourth at 197 pounds.
Sophomore 174-pounder Lincoln Archibald posted a 2-1 record to finish fifth, while senior 141-pounder Ryan Trimber went 1-1 for a fifth-place finish.
Freshman Massimo Gonzalez and junior Brock Beach both went 1-2 to finish sixth in the 141- and 285-pound brackets, respectively.
Up next: Penn College travels to compete in the Ithaca Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7. Wrestling begins at 3 p.m. Friday and resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday.
