Washington College Edges Penn College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Penn College dropped a pair of one-run games to Washington College in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday. The Shoremen edged out a 1-0 win in the first game, and outslugged the Wildcats, 10-9, in the nightcap.

Penn College fell to 2-8, while WC improved to 13-1.

In game one,
Washington pushed its only run across in the first inning and limited the Wildcats to just three hits the entire game.

Samuel Zeigler turned in a highlight reel snag in the sixth when he leaped and reached over the fence to rob Max Hammond of a home run and keep it a one-run contest.

Devon Sanders fell to 0-3 despite allowing just one run, on six hits, with three strikeouts and two walks, in six innings of work.

In game two,
Penn College took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning. Richard Lennon, Brittan Kittle, Colton Riley, and Alex Flicker all picked up RBIs in the first frame.

WC added two runs in the second and three in the third to take a 5-4 lead before the Wildcats answered with five in the fifth to retake the lead, 9-5. Kittle smacked a two-run single to left, Zeigler brought in a run on a fielder's choice, and Zeigler roped a two-run single to left for Penn College.

Washington took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning – including Ryan Zwier's two-run homer.

Andrew Gilbert was saddled with the loss after a third of inning, allowing one run on one hit. He relieved Cody Nelson, who fired three innings, allowing four earned run on one hit, with four walks and two strikeouts. Nathan Holt started the game, lasting 2.2 innings, surrendering four earned runs on three hits, with one strikeout and two walks.
