READING, Pa. – Penn College traveled to Penn State Berks Saturday afternoon to face off in a rematch of last year's NEAC championship game. The Wildcats dropped two hard-fought games, 3-8 and 12-13. Penn College fell to 6-16 overall, 4-4 NEAC, while the Nittany Lions improve to 15-8, 6-2.
Penn State Berks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a homerun. It was then a defensive battle as both teams struggled to bring any runs across the plate. Berks would add to their lead by scoring 3 in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-0.
The Wildcats would respond with a streak of their own started by
Brittan Kittle sending a solo homerun over the left field fence. After a single each from
Alex Flicker and
Richard Lennon,
Cole Hofmann ripped a double to right center field to score 1 RBI.
Connor Burke kept the offense alive by reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Lennon, to bring the Wildcats within one run, 4-3.
That's as close as it would get as Berks would add 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth and go on to win, 8-3.
Alex Zelger led the Wildcats' offensive attack going 3-4 from the plate, followed by Kittle going 2-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI and Lennon 2-3 with 1 run.
Nathan Holt (2-4) took the loss on the mound by allowing 8 runs (7 earned) with 8 hits and 2 walks.
In game two,
The Wildcats looked to respond as
Jacob Carles drilled a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Berks would add 1 run in the inning to trail 2-1 after the first inning.
Penn College kept the momentum going in the third inning. First,
Alex Zelger ripped a double to center field. Then, Carles hit his second two-run homerun of the game to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Brittan Kittle kept the pressure on berks by following with a solo homerun. Berks would be forced to make a pitching change, but it didn't slow down the Wildcats as
Connor Burke hit a sacrifice fly to right field, to score an RBI and go up 6-1.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Richard Lennon and
Cole Hofmann would each score an RBI for the Wildcats to go up 8-1. The Nittany Lions answered scoring 4 runs to bring the score to 8-5 through five innings.
Penn State Berks added two more runs in the sixth inning, five runs in the seventh inning and 1 run in the eighth inning to lead the Wildcats 13-8 heading into the final inning.
The Wildcats showed a lot of heart and toughness by continuing to fight until the end. After a
Alex Flicker single, Hofmann would single and score an RBI to get the offense fired up. Then with two runs on base,
Ethan Ketterman drilled a 3-run homerun to make it a one-run game with one out. The Wildcats couldn't keep the streak alive and fell to Berks, 12-13.
Penn College's offense had four homeruns in game, led by Carles (2) with 4 RBIs, Kittle (1) with 1 RBI and Ketterman (1) with 3 RBIs.
Jordan Hunter (0-1) takes the loss on the mound for the Wildcats by allowing 5 runs and 3 hits.
Penn College looks to bounce back with a rematch against Penn State Berks tomorrow, Sunday, April 14
th, starting at 12:00pm.
