WASHINGTON, D.C. – Penn College
travelled to the Nation's Capital Saturday to face
Gallaudet University in a
NEAC baseball doubleheader. The Wildcats doubled up the Bison in the first game, 10-5, and went on to dominate the second game, 23-9. Penn College improved to to 10-19 overall, 7-6
NEAC, while
Gallaudet fell to 9-26, 2-12.
In Game One,
Penn College showed up ready to go to work. Alex
Zelger, the leadoff batter, got things started with a double to left field. Jacob
Carles followed with a double of his own to score
Zelger and take an early 1-0 lead. Alex flicker continued the attack by reaching on a fielder's choice and to score
Carles.
Colton Riley ripped a shot down the third base line and reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman to keep the inning alive and score Flicker as the Wildcats end the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
Penn College would add another run in the second inning when Samuel
Zeigl smashed a deep shot to center field for a triple.
Zelger followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Zeigl to go up 4-0. The Wildcats kept the bats swinging in the third inning when
Brittan Kittle singled to right center field and then scored on a double from
Colton Riley to go up 5-3.
After both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, Penn College rallied with a four-run fifth inning to break open the game. With two outs, the Wildcats drew two walks and Riley was hit by pitch to load the bases for Cole
Hofmann.
Hofmann smacked a ball and was dropped by the first baseman to score 2 runs and advance the other base runner. Ethan
Ketterman followed with a huge hit to left field for a double and to score 2 RBIs as the Wildcats end the inning up 9-3.
Gallaudet added 2 runs in the sixth and Penn College added 1 more run in the seventh when
Richard Lennon doubled down the left field line and then was brought in by a double from
Ketterman. The Wildcats took the first game 10-5 with eight hits.
Ketterman finished 2-4 at-bat with 3 RBIs, Riley added 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI, and Lennon followed with 1-3 at-bat and 2 runs.
Nathan Holt (4-4) continued the season with another stellar pitching performance as he went the distance against the Bison to get the win by striking out 8 batters and giving up 0 walks.
In Game Two,
There were no holds barred in the second game as Penn College used all their momentum from the first game to tally runs in the finale of Saturday's doubleheader.
Gallaudet scored first to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but it would not last long. Penn College scored 1 run in the top of the third inning when
Richard Lennon singled to center field to score Alex
Zelger to close the gap, 3-1.
The Wildcats then scored a total of 18 runs during the fourth and fifth innings to take complete control of the game. It started with two runners on base and
Brittan Kittle at the plate, who then singled to left field to score the first run of the fourth inning. After
Alex Flicker was hit by pitch, Lennon drew a walk to score an additional run.
Colton Riley and Ethan
Ketterman each followed with singles to score 3 RBIs total.
Brayden Lippert scored the final run of the inning on a single to left field to bring Riley across the plate for the Wildcats to take a 7-3 lead.
The Wildcats kept the runs coming by adding 12 runs in the fifth inning highlighted by doubles from
Ketterman and Alex
Zelger and 2 RBIs for Flicker. The offense continued with 4 more runs in the eighth inning started by a single from Jacob
Carles to score Christian
Perna and a double from
Rylan Whitmyer to score
Connor Burke.
Gallaudet would add 3 runs in the eighth inning but the Wildcats were too far in front for the Bison to catch up. The Wildcats took the second game in commanding fashion, 23-9.
Penn College's offense was electric the entire game.
Ketterman led the way going 3-5 at-bat with 3 RBIs and 1 run. Flicker and Lennon added 3 RBIs apiece. Other players with multiple hits include:
Carles, Riley,
Lippert and
Perna.
Devon Sanders (2-4) gets the big win for the Wildcats on the mound as he faced 24 batters through 6 innings and finished with 2 strikeouts and gave up 3 runs.
Penn College continues the trip to Washington D.C. tomorrow when they face
Gallaudet one more time, Sunday, April 28
th, at 12:
