KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Penn College traveled to the Empire State to battle conference foe Keuka College in a NEAC double header Sunday afternoon. Penn College dropped the first game 2-1 and Keuka rallied to steal the second game in extra innings, 5-4. The Wildcats fell to 5-12 overall, 3-2 NEAC, while the Wolves improved to 8-11, 3-2.
In game one,
The Wildcats' stingy defense, led by pitcher
Nathan Holt, had a shut-out game through three innings. The Wolves struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning by tallying one unearned run on an error by the Wildcats' defense.
Penn College would respond in the top of the fifth inning when
Alex Zelger drew a walk and reached first base. Zelger then advanced to second base on a balk from the Keuka pitcher to put a runner in scoring position.
Jacob Carles stepped up to the plate and ripped a single to center field to bring in 1 RBI and tie the score, 1-1.
After holding the Wolves scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats went into the sixth inning tied before giving up one run to go down 2-1 after six innings. Penn College was unable to answer the call in the seventh inning and dropped the first game to Keuka, 2-1.
Connor Burke led the Wildcats offense going 2-3 at-bat with Carles adding 1 RBI.
Holt went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).
In game two,
Penn College would respond with an aggressive offensive attack.
Jacob Carles struck a single, who then proceeded to steal second base.
Brittan Kittle followed with a single down the left field line to bring in Carles, and the Wildcats strike first, 1-0.
Alex Flicker was next with a double to right center and scored Kittle, to go up 2-0.
After tough defensive standoffs, both teams went scoreless in the next two innings. Keuka would be the next to score as they tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, to close the gap, 2-1. Penn College would respond by adding one run in the top of the fifth inning as Kittle would double to bring in Carles, to go up 3-1.
Samuel Zeigler would single in the sixth inning to score Cole Hoffman and go up 4-1.
Keuka would not go down without a fight. The Wolves would add one run in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap, 4-2. And then would tally two more runs to tie the score 4-4, to send the game into extra innings.
In extra innings, both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning. Keuka's defense remained strong to hold the Wildcats in the top of the ninth, and then the Wolves' offense was able to add one run in the bottom of the 9
th to take the game 5-4.
The Wildcat's offense was steady with 12 hits in the game, but left 11 runners on base. Kittle lead the offensive attack going 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run followed by Carles going 2-5 with 2 runs.
Devon Sanders started on the mound for the Wildcats going 8 innings pitched and allowing 8 hits with 4 runs (2 earned).
Hunter Thomas takes the loss (0-2) by allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run.
Penn College returns to action Tuesday, April 9
th, as the Wildcats travel to face in-state rival Penn State Altoona in a double header starting at 1:00pm.
