Wildcats’ Early Offense Not Enough, Fall to Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn College traveled to Penn State Altoona in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats' offense started strong in both games, but couldn't hold on as Altoona took the first game 10-9 and the second game 16-7.  The losses drop the Wildcats to 5-14 overall, while the Lions jump to 17-9.

Game One: Penn College 9, Penn State Altoona 10
The Wildcats came out swinging to jump start the game.  With two runners on base and Brittan Kittle stepping to the plate, Kittle ripped a double down the right field line to score Alex Zelger and advance Jacob Carles to third.  Alex Flicker followed with a single to right field, scoring Carles and advancing Kittle to third to take an early 2-0 lead.  With the offense still hot, Richard Lennon singled, bringing in Kittle and putting Flicker on second.  Connor Burke drilled a ball to center field on a sacrifice fly, scoring Flicker for the last run of the inning to go up 4-0.

Penn State Altoona would respond by bringing in two runs in the bottom of the first inning to close the lead to 4-2.  The Lions continued their scoring with five additional runs in the second inning to go up 7-4.

Burke would record his second RBI of the game in the third inning with a grounder to third base, bringing the game to 7-5.  Then Samuel Zeigler would give new life to the Wildcats when he hit a solo homerun to left center field in the top of the fourth to make it a one run game, 7-6.

The Lions would bring in an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 8-6.  The Wildcats answered with their own run when Burke singled up the middle, bringing in Cole Hoffmann, to make it 8-7.  The back and forth duel continued with Altoona adding two runs in the bottom of the fifth, to go up 10-7.

Penn College would not go away easy as they battled in the top of the seventh inning when Zeigler ripped a shot to score one run, followed by Alex Zelger singling to right field and scoring a RBI, making it 10-9.  Even with 15 hits for the Wildcats, Altoona closed out the game to take the victory by one run.

Connor Burke led the Wildcats offense going 2-3 at-bat with 3 RBIs, followed by Zelger going 3-5 at-bat with 1 run and 1 RBI.  Other multi-hit batters include: Kittle, Hofmann (2 doubles), and Zeigler.

Game Two: Penn College 7, Penn State Altoona 16

The Wildcats would regain the lead in the second inning on a double from Samuel Zeigler to bring in Conner Curran, to go up 3-2.  That's the last time the Wildcats would have the lead as the Lions answered with a 6-run inning to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

Down 16-4, the Wildcats would make a late rally, with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Jacob Courtley scored a run for the Wildcats on a wild pitch.  Then in the seventh, Rylan Whitmyer drilled a hard shot to left center field for a double, bringing in two runs, to make the score 16-7.
