WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College finished 0-4 – three matches by two points or less – at the Mid-Winter Classic Saturday at Liberty Arena. The Wildcats fell to Johns Hopkins, 25-24, McDaniel College, 24-22, Gettysburg, 25-23, and Muhlenberg, 38-15.
Against Johns Hopkins,
After giving up a forfeit at 125, Penn College took a 15-6 lead with a fall from
Ryan Bauer and
Colin Jens, and a decision by
Jesse Walker. The Blue Jays won the ensuing three bout to take an 18-15 advantage.
Jared Mooney's 6-5 decision at 184 evened the match at 18-18 before Hopkins picked up a pin at 197 and Wildcats received a forfeit at heavyweight to tie the meet at 24-24. The Blue Jays were awarded the win on the third tiebreaker – points in matches that ended in a decision or major decision.
Against Muhlenberg,
Lukas O'Connor and Erik Schrek both earned falls at 141 and 157, while
Dylan Gettys earned the Wildcats other team points following a 9-2 decision at 165.
Against McDaniel,
Both teams traded wins in all 10 bouts. After a forfeit at 125, Penn College evened the match with Bauer's fall in 59 seconds at 133. Schrek tied the match again with a pin at 149 and
Jason Penton's 12-8 win at 165 tied the match for a third time, 15-15.
The Green Terror took an 18-15 lead after a decision at 174, before
Jared Mooney put Penn College ahead, 19-18, with a 13-4 major decision at 184. McDaniel picked up a pin at 197 to go ahead 24-19, while
Brendan McGinley picked up a 2-0 decision at heavyweight.
Against Gettysburg,
Gettysburg built a 15-4 lead through the first four matches, with
Ryan Bauer putting Penn College on the board with a 13-5 major decision at 133. The Wildcats won consecutive bouts at 149 and 157 with decisions from
Trevor Crowley and Gettys to make it 15-10, before the Bullets made it 19-10 with a major at 174.
Mooney pulled PCT within three, 19-16, with a pin in 2:17 before Gettysburg matched it with a fall at 197. McGinley finished the match with a pin in 1:54 at heavyweight.
Outside the Box: "We wrestled well through the first three bouts, and for the most part all day," Penn College coach
Jamie Miller said. "The losses that we took, we got outcoached. Our guys worked their hardest, battled through injuries, and competed to the best of their ability, but in the end, it came down to preparation and we just weren't as prepared as they were. We'll get back to work on Monday and set our sights on Alvernia."
