HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Penn College suffered a 71-66 setback in overtime to Houghton College in a nonconference women's basketball game Saturday. The Wildcats fell to 1-7, while the Highlanders improved to 6-3.
How it happened:
Rachel Teats sank a pair of free throws to give Penn College a 62-59 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation but Amanda Jackson beat the buzzer with a three to send the game into overtime deadlocked at 62. The Wildcats took an early 64-62 lead in overtime on a Teats' layup before the Highlanders answered with a 7-0 run to gain separation and secure the win.
Houghton built a 37-27 halftime lead after outscoring Penn College 21-18 in the first quarter and 16-9 in the second.
Penn College chipped away at Houghton's lead in the third with a 10-4 run to open the quarter to make it 41-37 on
Ja'Quela Dyer's jumper with five minutes left. The Wildcats trailed 48-44 after the third.
Kayleigh Miller's three with 7:03 left in the game gave Penn College a 51-50 lead before the teams traded the lead three different times before a 56-56 deadlock with 3:37 on the clock. Dyer put PCT ahead 60-56 with a jumper with just under a minute left in the game, setting up the dramatic conclusion.
Inside the box: Teats scored a game-high 18 points for Penn College, while Dyer and
Aubrey Stetts finished with 14 and 12 points. Dyer added a game-high 17 rebounds and Teats tallied a game-best six assists.
Abby Guiher led Houghton with 17 points.
