WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College dropped a 55-50 decision to St. Mary's College in a United East women's basketball game Saturday. The Wildcats fell to 1-1 United East, 1-6 overall, while the Seahawks improved to 2-0, 3-4.
How it happened: Penn College held a 46-43 lead following a
Maci Ilgen free throw with 5:23 left in the game before St. Mary's rallied to take a 48-46 advantage two minutes later.
Cassi Kuhns' layup knotted the game at 48 but SMC quickly answered to take a 50-48 lead with 3:07 on the clock. The Wildcats tied the game for a final time when
Rachel Teats' layup deadlocked the game again, 50-50, with 2:15 left in the game but the Seahawks netted five unanswered points the remainder of the quarter.
Penn College rallied from a 21-14 first quarter deficit to get as close as one on four separate occasions in the second quarter before heading into the break trailing 31-30. The Wildcats took their largest lead, 39-35, on
Ja'Quela Dyer's layup with 4:58 left in the third quarter but the Seahawks ended the quarter with an 8-1 run to take a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Inside the box: Teats finished with a team-high 14 points while
Aubrey Stetts added 10. Dyer grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for Penn College.
Karon Williams netted a game-high 16 points for St. Mary's.
