ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Jake Kallenborn highlighted Penn College's 13
th-place finish at the RIT Invitational Saturday. Kallenborn entered the tournament unseeded at 197 and finished second after a thrilling overtime championship bout.
Inside the brackets: Kallenborn rolled into the quarterfinals by way of a 12-1 major decision and a first period injury default. He knocked of the third seed 12-6 in the quarters, then cruised past the seventh seed, 12-5, in the semifinals.
Kallenborn met top seeded Bryce McCloskey (Thiel) in the final. McCloskey capitalized on a missed throw attempt from Kallenborn early in the first period, securing a takedown and two nearfall points to lead 4-0. After an escape and a takedown, Kallenborn pulled within a point and finished the first period down 5-3. McCloskey scored the only point of the second period on an escape, extending his lead to 6-3. Kallenborn chose to start the third period on his feet and took advantage with a takedown early in the period to pull within one. He surrendered an escape, bringing the match back to their feet with just over a minute left in the match. With time winding down, Kallenborn missed on a double from space, but recovered with a headlock on the edge of the mat as time expired to send the match to overtime, tied 6-6. Just seconds into overtime,
Kallenborn turned away a low shot attempt by McCloskey. In the ensuing scramble, Kallenborn looked to end the match with a throw, but came up just short and McCloskey was able to secure the take down to end it. Kallenborn finished the day 4-1.
At 125:
Ryan Berstler reached the quarterfinals by winning his first two matches 10-0 and 6-4. He fell in the quarte finals to eventual fifth place finisher and dropped his final match of the day to the sixth place finisher.
Also competing at 125, CJ Trimber (he went 0-2).
At 133:
Patrick Snoke finished the day with three wins – a fall, a tech fall, and a 7-5 decision. His two losses came to the eventual fourth and fifth place finishers.
At 141:
Noah Hunt used a fall and a 9-5 decision to reach the quarterfinals before falling to eventual tournament champ Jarrod Brezovec (John Carroll). He finished the day 2-2.
Colin Jens also finished the day 2-2. After picking up a medical forfeit in the second period of his first match, he lost a hard fought 1-0 decision to eventual third place finisher Russell Benson (Delaware Valley). He recorded one more win in the consolation finals before injury defaulting in his final match.
At 149 : Nick Semon led the way with two wins, both by fall, finishing the day 2-2.
Logan Ledebohm also competed at 149.
At 157:
Cullen van Rooyen finished 3-2 with two falls and a major decision.
Anton Esterbrook went 2-2 recording a pin and a 8-7 decision.
Mason Saeler picked up his first win of the year, that coming by first period fall. Molloy also picked up a win by fall, finishing the day 1-2.
Logan Newton also competed at 157.
At 165:
Jesse Walker went 1-2, his win coming by way of an 18-1 technical fall.
At 184:
Garrett Storch reached the quarter finals after picking up his first collegiate win, an 8-1 decision. Finished the day 1-2.
At 197:
Gabriel Kennedy-Citeroni competed for the Wildcats, finishing 0-2.
