WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College opened the 2021 campaign with a double-header sweep of Morrisville in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball twinbill Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 after a 14-0 win and a 10-2 victory, while the Mustangs fell to 0-2.
In game one,
How it Happened:
Kyla Benner pitched the first perfect game of her career for the Wildcats, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out eight batters in five innings. Benner faced 15 batters and not one was able to reach base.
Inside the Box: Penn College came out aggressive as they scored 13 of their 14 runs in the first inning and finished with four stolen bases.
Jaylynn Cochran recorded 3 RBI and 2 runs while
Jordan Specht,
Shayla Bickel and
Ivvy Morder notched multiple hits. Benner improved to 1-0 after her perfect gem.
In game two,
How it Happened: After both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, the Mustangs looked to bounce back as they reached the scoreboard first to go up 2-0 in the third inning. The Wildcats responded with an RBI from Bickle to score
Madison Shaffer to make it 2-1. Penn College added another run in the fourth inning to tie the game up 2-2, and added 8 runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 10-2 and end the game early.
Inside the Box:
Olivia Hemstock started the scoring route in the fifth inning with a triple to score two runs followed by a double from Specht to bring in Hemstock. Shaffer finished the game by ripping a single to right field to bring in 2 runs which now put the game out of reach and gave the Wildcats the victory.
Kassidy Svenson improved to 1-0 after striking out one and scattering two hits.
