WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College used some timely hits as they swept Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats won game one by a score of 5-3 and game two 6-5. Penn College improves to 5-5 overall/NEAC while Wells drops to 9-10 overall and 3-7 NEAC.
In game one,
How it Happened: Penn College scored a pair of runs in the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead over Wells.
Brittan Kittle and
Christian Perna hit sacrifice flies in the first and in the bottom of the second
Jacob Carles and Kittle had RBI singles to make it 4-0. Wells chipped into the lead in the top of the 4
th on a single and an error at short to come within 4-2. In the bottom half of the 4
th Perna added another sac fly to right scoring Carles to push the Wildcats lead to 5-2. Wells plated their third run in the top of the 5
th and threatened for more runs before starting Wildcats pitcher
Ben Bretzman worked out of a bases loaded jam by getting a flyout to right.
Joe Fatzinger picked up the save by inducing a bases loaded dribbler back to the mound in the top of the 7
th.
Inside the Box:
Bretzman picked up his second win of the season after he allowed just three runs (two earned) and seven hits. He struck out seven Wells batters in five innings of work. Connor Burke and Carles had two hits at the plate and Kittle and Perna knocked in two runs apiece.
In game two,
How it Happened:
After falling behind 2-0, Penn College tied the game in the bottom of the 4
th on a
Cameron Dick two-RBI single to center. Penn College took a 4-2 lead an inning later on a
Connor Burke single through the left side that plated
Brian Robison and
Tyler Rudolph. After giving up the lead in the top of the 7
th the Wildcats rallied again with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 7
th. Perna had an RBI groundout to short and
Shane Price ripped a single to left scoring Kittle to make it 6-5. Brian Robinson worked a perfect final two innings in relief on the mound as he picked up the save for the Wildcats.
Inside the Box: Kittle went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two doubles and two runs scored. Burke and Dick drove in two runs apiece.
Cole Culver pitched a gutsy 6.1 innings of three hit ball. Culver allowed three earned runs while striking out five Express.
Evan Nagy got his first win of the season in relief. Robison came in from second base to close the game out in notching his first save for the Wildcats. Robison allowed no hits and struck out three in his two innings of work.
