ABINGTON, Pa. – Penn College won its seventh-game after a double-header sweep over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball twinbill Thursday. The Wildcats improved to 11-1 after a 19-9 win in the first game and a 14-5 victory in the nightcap.
In game one
How it Happened: Penn College took an early 5-0 lead in the first after a pair of RBIs from
Margaret Mangene and
Lesley Fritz, and a sacrifice fly by
Shayla Bickel. The Wildcats made it 7-0 in the top of the second on another RBI from Mangene and a fielder's choice by
Jaylynn Cochran.
The Lions plated their first run in the second to make 7-1 before PCT added five in the top of the fourth –including a two-run blast by Mangene -- to take 12-1 lead. Abington exploded for eight in the bottom of the fourth to pull within three, 12-9.
Penn College regrouped in the fifth with seven runs after
Olivia Hemstock batted in two runs and Fritz, Bickel,
Ivvy Morder, and Mangene all brought in one run.
Inside the Box: Hemstock finished with four hits for Penn College,
Jordan Specht and Mangene each had three, while
Maddie Hurst, Cochran, and Bickel all finished with two hits. Mangene finished with six RBIs, Hemstock brought in four, and Fritz and Bickel plated three runners.
Kyla Benner remained perfect at 6-0 after firing a complete-game. She allowed eight earned, on nine hits, with three strike outs and five walks.
In game two
How it Happened: Penn College scored seven runs in the first two innings and added two in the fourth to take an early 9-0 lead, with Mangene bringing in four of those runs. Following Specht's two-run single and Morder's sacrifice fly put PCT ahead 12-1 in the fifth, the Lions crossed home four times in the bottom of the frame to make it 12-5.
Fritz' double and Hurst's triple in the sixth tacked on two more runs to put the Wildcats ahead 14-5 before Abington added two in the bottom of the frame.
Inside the Box: Hurst and Mangene led Penn College with three hits each, while Hemstock, Specht, and Cochran each picked up a pair of hits. Mangene added a team-best four RBIs.
Kassidy Svenson improved to 5-1 after five innings in the circle. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.
