Wildcats Earn Important Split with Penn State Berks; Specht has Five Hit Day

Williamsport, Pa. –  Penn College split an important North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Penn State Berks on Saturday afternoon.  Penn College lost game one 5-2 and won game two by the score of 3-1.  The Wildcats improve to 12-2 overall/NEAC while the Nittany Lions see their record stand at 16-2 overall/NEAC.

In game one
How it Happened: After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, Penn College tied the game in the bottom of the first on a Margaret Mangene two-RBI double to the right center gap.  Penn State Berks took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth and padded their lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth.  Penn College had two potential rallies stymied by line out double plays turned by Penn State Berks defense.

Inside the Box: Jordan Specht led the way from the plate for the Wildcats, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a double.  Mangene went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Kyla Benner (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season.  She allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking four and striking out three in a complete game effort.

In game two
How it Happened: Penn College tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Margaret Mangene RBI line drive single past the pitcher that scored Olivia Hemstock from third.  With one out in the bottom of the fifth Shayla Bickel launched a triple to the center field wall.  One batter later Maddie Hurst fought off an inside pitch down the leftf ield line for an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.  With two outs Hurst was able to steal second which proved pivotal as Jordan Specht laced an RBI single through the left side that plated Hurst with the Wildcats third run.

Inside the Box: Kassidy Svenson notched her fifth win of the season scattering just four hits and one run in seven innings of work from the circle.
Mangene and Specht had a pair of hits to go along with an RBI.  Madison Shaffer, Lesley Fritz, Hemstock, Hurst and Bickel all had a hit from the plate.

Up Next: Penn College returns to action Sunday when they travel to Middletown, PA for a NEAC doubleheader vs Penn State Harrisburg.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
