VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Penn College dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings to No. 2 ranked Virginia Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Softball Atlantic Regional Friday at Virginia Wesleyan University. The Wildcats fell to 19-4, while the Marlins improved to 38-5-1.
How it Happened: The Marlins took an early 1-0 lead with a Julia Sinnett double to left before tacking on two – a Sinnett sacrifice fly to center and Katelyn Biando's triple to right. VWU added five in the fourth, including Danielle Stewart's two-run homer to right.
Penn College was held hitless and
Jaylynn Cochran was the only Wildcat to reach base on an error in the fifth.
Inside the Box: Hanna Hull and Emily Seale combined for a five-inning no hitter for the Marlins. Hull improved to 19-3 after four innings in the circle, with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Seale finished the final inning with two strikeouts.
Kyla Benner fell to 9-2 after 3.2 innings of work. She allowed eight earned runs, on 11 hits, with one strikeout and no walks.
Coach Speak: "I was very proud of how my team came out and played, I believe they stayed composed the entire game," Penn College coach
Angie Hunley said. "Unfortunately it's tough going against one of the top teams in the nation. Like I said, their composure impressed me today and I was very proud of how they handled themselves."
Up Next: Penn College takes on Gettysburg Friday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game. The Bullets fell to TCNJ in Friday's second game.
