WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Gavin Barrett recorded his third career triple-double to help Penn College to a 79-65 win over John Jay in the Crosstown Challenge Friday. The Wildcats improved to 2-0, while Bloodhounds fell to 0-3.
How it happened: After five lead changes in the opening seven minutes, Penn College took a 14-13 lead on Rees Watkins' layup with 13:20 left in the first. The Wildcats led by as many as 10, after a pair of Barrett free throws with 8:53 on the clock, but John Jay clawed back and evened the game at 34-34 with four minutes before the break. The Bloodhounds led 41-40, with 1:28 remaining, but a Will Sulesky jumper and Alex Cooper's trey gave Penn College a 45-41 lead at half.
The Wildcats opened the second half with 15-3 run to take a 60-44 lead on Max Jackowsky's three six minutes into the final period. Penn College's lead never dipped below double-digits the remainder of the game.
Inside the box: Barrett finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and game-high 12 assists for the Wildcats. Cooper scored a career-high 21 points, on 10 of 12 from the floor, Watkins recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Obens Luxama finished 10 points.
