Cory wins Ned McGinley, Hunt finishes sixth

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Penn College freshman Isaac Cory began his collegiate career standing on top of the podium after winning the Ned McGinley Invitational at 184 pounds Saturday at King's College. Noah Hunt finished sixth at 141, while the Wildcats placed 10th in the team standings.

Inside the bracket: Cory entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and earned two first period pins over opponents from York and RIT before a convincing decision over the No. 5 seed in the quarterfinals to set up a showdown against No. 1 tournament seed, and No. 14 nationally ranked, Cole Shaugnessy of Roger Williams.

Cory dominated the match up, scoring the only offensive points in the bout, with three takedowns to earn a berth to the finals. Cory squared off against No. 2 seed Colby Giroux of RIT and scored a takedown and pair of back points to put him up 4-0 within the first minute of the final. The scoring sequence ended with Giroux needing to injury default and resulted in Cory becoming the first-ever Ned McGinley Invitational Champion in program history.

Hunt, a returning regional place-winner, had a productive showing and earned a pair of wins against opponents from King's and Waynesburg to earn a semifinal berth. Hunt was bested by eventual tournament champion in the semis and slid to a sixth- place finish after tough losses in the consolation semifinal and 5th place bout.

Freshman Liam Goodrich finished 3-2 at 149. He opened with a victory over Joe Brillo of RIT before upsetting the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals. After a tough 3-2 semifinal loss, Goodrich responded on the backside by picking up a pin over Grant of RIT. The freshman concluded his debut event by splitting matches with Brillo.

Cullen Van Rooyen and Nick Semon both finished 2-2 at 157, while Ryan Berstler, Patrick Snoke, Mason Leshock, and Gabriel Kennedy-Citeroni was picked up a win for Penn College.
