MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn College swept a baseball doubleheader against Rivier University Wednesday before falling to Catholic Thursday to wrap up its Spring Break trip with six wins and improved to 6-4. The Wildcats shutout Rivier 12-0 and 10-0 and fell to Catholic 14-6.
Against Rivier,
In game one
, Penn College bats stayed hot vs. Rivier as they pounded out 16 hits in a 12-0 win. The Wildcats plated three runs in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings and limited Rivier to just two hits.
Jake Wagner paved the way for the Wildcats with a 4-for-5 performance from the plate, driving in three runs and scoring three times.
Jacob Carles,
Tyler Rudolph and
Brian Robison all finished with three hits from the plate.
Samuel Zeigler notched his third win of the season allowing just one hit while striking out five in four innings of work.
In game two,
Tyler Rudolph got things going in the bottom of the second inning with his first home run of the season and Reese Kaufmann plated two on a single to left to extend the lead to 3-0. It was a lead the Wildcats would not relinquish as they went on to win 10-0 in a rain shortened five-inning game.
Penn College broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored five runs. The big hit came on a
Cameron Dick triple to left center with the bases loaded.
Dick finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate knocking in four runs.
Joel Verrico picked up his first win of the season. Verrico scattered two hits, striking out seven batters in four innings of work.
Against Catholic,
Catholic took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before RBIs from Rudolph and Dick in the bottom of the frame made it 3-2. The Cardinals added two in the second and four in the third to take a 9-2 advantage, while the Wildcats tacked on two in the bottom of the third on Rudolph's two-run single to right. Catholic added four in the sixth and one in the ninth and Penn College picked up a run in the eighth and ninth on a single from
Kolten Smith and an error.
Dick led Penn College with two hits and Rudolph batted in three runs.
Kevin Cute took the loss after one inning of work. He allowed three earned runs, on three hits, with one strikeout and two walks.
Penn College returns to action Wednesday at Wilson College.
