MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Penn College opened up their 2022 season with a hard fought split on day one of their Spring Break trip. The Wildcats defeated Clarks Summit University 6-4 in game one before falling to North Carolina Wesleyan University 12-9 in game two.
In game one,
Penn College opened up a 6-1 lead after four innings and thwarted a fifth inning rally by Clarks Summit in winning game one.
Penn College opened up scoring in the second inning.
Jaylynn Cochran doubled on an 0-1 count, scoring one run.
The Wildcats put up four runs in the fourth inning. The offensive onslaught by
Penn College Softball was led by
Kyla Benner,
Maddie Hurst,
Olivia Hemstock,
Jordan Specht, and
Maggie Mangene, who all drove in runs.
Hemstock led Penn College with three hits from the dish. Benner picked up where she left off from 2021 as she collected her first win in the circle allowing just one earned run while striking out 12 batters in seven innings.
In game two,
Penn College lost the lead late in a 12-9 defeat to North Carolina Wesleyan on Monday afternoon. The game was tied at nine with North Carolina Wesleyan batting in the top of the seventh when
Todd doubled on an 0-1 count, scoring one run. Penn College collected ten hits and North Carolina Wesleyan had 14 in the high-scoring affair.
The Wildcats got things moving in the first inning.
Jordan Specht's and Maggie
Mangene's sac fly's scored one run a piece for Penn College.
Penn College tallied seven runs in the sixth inning. The offensive firepower by
Penn College Softball was led by
Olivia Eisenhauer,
Madison Shaffer,
Olivia Hemstock, and
Specht, all knocking in runs in the inning.
MacKenzie Weaver was on the rubber for Penn College. Weaver allowed ten hits and six runs over five and a third innings, striking out five and walking one.
Taylor Cashner and
Hailey DeBrody entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one inning and two-thirds of an inning respectively.
Specht and
Hemstock each collected multiple hits for
Penn College.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow when they take on King's College in a doubleheader.
