ABINGTON, Pa. – Penn College split a United East softball doubleheader against Penn State-Abington Friday. The Wildcats improved to 23-3 UE, 25-8 overall, following a 6-3 setback in game one and a 13-3 win in the nightcap.
Penn College held onto its two-game lead over Penn State-Harrisburg (21-5) and Penn State-Berks (21-5) and remains on top of the United East standings with two games left to play against Berks.
How it happened: Abington took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning of game one. Penn College pulled within one, 3-2, in the fifth when
Olivia Hemstock's single brought in a run and error plated the second run. PSA responded in the bottom of the frame with three more runs before an error in the sixth gave Penn College its final score.
The Wildcats quickly regrouped in game two with four runs in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth to end the game after five innings.
Inside the box: Hemstock led Penn College at the plate in the first game with two hits and one RBI.
Kyla Benner fell to 12-5 after three innings of work. She surrendered three earned runs, on six hits, with four strikeouts, and one walk.
Hailey DeBrody finished the final three innings, allowing two earned runs, on five hits, with zero strikeouts, and one walk.
Jordan Specht and
Margaret Mangene paced Penn College's offense with three hits each. Hemstock and Mackenzie Weaver both finished with two hits – including a double each, with Weaver batting in four runs, DeBrody and Mangene knocking in three, and
Ivvy Morder bringing in a pair.
Weaver improved to 13-2 after a complete-game in the circle. She allowed one earned run, on seven hits, with nine strikeouts, and one walk.
