WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College swept Penn State-Harrisburg in a United East softball doubleheader in a rematch of last season's conference championship Tuesday. The Wildcats needed just five innings for a 10-0 win in the first game before going extra innings in a 2-1 nine-inning victory in the nightcap. Penn College improved to 11-6 overall, 7-1 UE, while the Nittany Lions fell to 12-8, 6-2.
How it happened: In game one, Penn College scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Jordan Specht roped an RBI single to right, an error plated
Olivia Hemstock, and
Margaret Mangene made it 3-0 with a triple to right. Hemstock's double to right in the second brought in
Maddie Hurst and
Ivvy Morder and Specht knocked home Hemstock with a single to right.
Hemstock made it 7-0 with an RBI triple to right in the fourth before Specht and
Kyla Benner both doubled to make it 9-0 and Jaylin Cochran plated the 10
th run with a single.
In game two, both teams went scoreless through the first seven innings sending the game into extra innings with a runner on second to start each half of the inning.
The Nittany Lions moved their runner to third after a bunt single before Mackenzie Weaver got the first out with a strikeout looking. Madelyn Krantz followed with a fly ball to center and Krysten Moore tagged from third after
Madison Shaffer's catch, but Shaffer rifled the ball from center on a rope to catcher
Ivvy Morder, who laid down the tagged, to end the inning and Harrisburg's scoring threat.
The Wildcats missed an opportunity in the bottom of the eighth when a wild pitch sent a runner from third, but Harrisburg's catcher was able to collect the ball a fire a perfect throw to the palte to stop Penn College from scoring.
The Nittany Lions added a run in the top of the ninth to lead 1-0. The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of ninth when Shaffer's two-out single to center plated Mangene and Hurst followed with a walk-off single to leftfield to score Jaylin Cochran and secure the win.
Inside the box: In game one, Hemstock and Specht both finished 3 for 3 with 3 RBI each. Benner improved to 6-3 after a five-inning shutout. She scattered two hits, with eight strikeouts, and no walks.
In game two, Cochran led Penn College at the plate with two hits. Weaver improved to 5-2 in the circle after a complete-game effort. She allowed one run, on four hits, with 10 strikeouts, and three walks.
