MANSFIELD, Pa. — Competing Saturday at the Mansfield University Short Course 6,000-meter run, freshman Mitchell Campbell finished fifth to lead the Penn College men in their cross-country season opener.

Penn College runners: Campbell turned in a time of 20:20.2, while senior Spencer Doughty finished 23rd in 24:29.8 and junior Noah Bowers was 25th in 24:49.1.

The field: In the two-team men's field, Bloomsburg University finished first with 19 points and host Mansfield was second with 38 points. Running unattached, Matt Wilbur led the 25-runner field with a time of 19:46.2.

Coach speak: "We were dealing with a bunch of nagging little injuries and made a decision not to push anybody," first-year coach Tom Leeser said. "I was very pleased with Mitch's run. We had done some workouts, but not any kind of time trial to see what he would look like racing, so that's really a good place to start for him."

Up next: On Saturday, Sept. 10, Penn College will compete in the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen Invitational.
