Altoona edges Wildcats in season opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College dropped a 58-57 decision to Penn State Altoona in a nonconference women's basketball game Tuesday. The Wildcats fell to 0-1, while the Nittany Lions improved to 1-0.

How it happened: Penn College surrendered a four-point lead with 49 seconds left in the contest and Altoona capitalized. Rachel Teats found Emily Pardee with 49 ticks on the clock to give PCT a 56-52 lead. The Lions answered with a three to close the gap to one, 56-55, five second later and tied the game with a free throw with 22 second remaining. A Penn College turnover led to an Altoona layup with five seconds left in the game. The Wildcats had a chance to even the game at the line with one second left but made just one of two baskets.

Altoona led the majority of the first quarter, and held a 14-8 lead with nine seconds left, but Lexi Troup drained a three at the buzzer to pull the Wildcats within three, 14-11, at the end of the first. The Lions led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, and took a 30-22 lead with 1:54 left before the break. A Pardee jay, and Kayleigh Miler's trey, pulled PCT within three, 30-27, with 50 seconds before Troup hit another buzzer-beater to deadlock the game, 30-30, at halftime.

The third quarter featured three ties and neither team held more than a one-possession lead until Troup's three with two seconds on the clock put the Wildcats ahead, 47-42, at the end of the third. Penn College opened the final period with a 7-1 run to take a 54-43 lead with 4:51 left on the clock and held the lead until the final five seconds.
