WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Penn College lost to Penn State Abington, 62-49, in a home United East women's basketball game on Saturday. Penn College now is 8-6 in the conference and 9-14 overall, while Abington is 5-10 UE and 7-15 overall.
How it happened: In their Senior Day season home finale, the Wildcats were slow out of the gate, falling behind 13-3 after the first quarter. Abington hiked its lead to 14 points (17-3) in the second frame before Penn College used a 9-3 run, with
Rachel Teats leading the offense, and closed the difference to 20-12 with 3:13 showing in the half. Abington then responded with an 8-3 run of its own to claim a 13-point, 28-15, halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats trimmed their deficit to 11 twice, the last time at 36-25 after a
Bell Hitesman layup with 3:59 showing, when an 8-0 gave Abington a 19-point lead at 44-25. Over the last 10 minutes, the Nittany Lions continued to pull away, leading by as many as 22 twice, before Penn College used a 16-7 finish over the last 4:01 — with
Lexi Troup scoring 11 points — to cut the final margin to 13.
Inside the box: Lexi Troup paced the Wildcats with 17 points and Teats had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Ja'Quela Dyer topped Penn College with 11 rebounds.
Angela Sanders led Abington with a game-high 26 points as the Nittany Lions salvaged a split in the season series.
