Penn College falls in doubleheader to Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. — Penn College dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Stockton University Friday by scores of 3-2 in seven innings and 11-1 in nine innings in the season-opening baseball games for both teams. Penn College now is 0-2 and Stockton is 2-0.

How it Happened: In the first game, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Brian Robison reached on a one-out single to center and scored on a double to left-center by Quinn Hanafin.

Stockton scored twice in the bottom of the fourth before Penn College tied the score at 2-all in the top of the fifth when Nate Gustkey drilled a one-out double to left-center, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Robison.

Stockton scored what turned out to be the game-winner on a solo home run by Tucker Elder off Wildcats reliever Chance Webb in the bottom of the fifth.

In the second game, Jake Wagner led off the sixth inning with a triple and scored Penn College's lone run on a single up the middle by Hanafin.

Stockton scored two runs in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings before adding five in the eighth while limiting the Wildcats to six hits. Penn College stranded three runners in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Inside the Box: Hanafin went 2 for 3 with one RBI in the first game for Penn College as starting pitcher Justin Porter allowed one earned run while giving up four hits, one walk and striking out two in four innings of work.

In the nightcap, Wagner went 2 for 3 and Hanafin 2 for 4. Wildcats starting pitcher Ben Bretzman went 5.2 innings and took the loss.

Up Next: Penn College faces Hilbert College at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 5, at Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
