ITHACA, N.Y. – Penn College's
Isaac Cory is headed to the big dance.
The freshman 184-pounder took home silver at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals Saturday and became the first wrestler in program history to advance to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held March 10-11 in Roanoke, Va.
Cory highlighted a contingent of three Wildcat wrestlers competing in Saturday's medal round.
Ryan Berstler finished seventh at 125 and
Noah Hunt a sixth-place finish at 141.
After a scoreless first period in the championship match, RIT's Colby Giroux took a 1-0 lead with an escape against Cory early in the period. Giroux later worked a toe-tapping single-leg takedown at the edge of the mat to lead 3-0. Cory got on the board with an escape late in the period to make it 3-1. Cory made it 3-2 in the third with an escape but missed his best chance for points when Giroux danced out of a strong ankle pick by Cory and held on for the win.
Cory reached the championship following a 4-2 decision over Centenary's Justin Hopman in the semifinals.
Berstler opened Saturday in the third round of the consolation bracket with a 4-1 setback to Cortland's Cody Merwin. Berstler took home seventh after a disqualification of McDaniel's Alex DuFour in the seventh-place bout.
Hunt, who finished fifth last year, knocked off McDaniel's Ryan Athey 7-0 in the consolation third round before dropping a high-scoring 16-11 decision to Ithaca's Luis Hernandez in the consolation semifinals. Hunt, who finished sixth at last year's regional, fell to Oneonta's Michael Blando by pin in 2:14 in the fifth-place match.
Penn College finished 11
th in the 21-team tournament with 55.5 points. The College of New Jersey won the team title with 137.5 points.
