ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Penn College lost, 73-67, in a United East men's basketball game at St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday. The Wildcats now are 4-8 in the conference and 9-12 overall. St. Mary's is 4-8 UE and 9-12 overall after the season series split.
How it happened: After two early lead changes, St. Mary's pulled ahead by five several times during the first 10 minutes before an Alec Cooper jump shot and layup pulled the Wildcats back within one at 22-21 with 10:21 left in the half. St. Mary's then went on an 18-5 run to open a 14-point lead at 40-26 and led 42-33 at the intermission.
A 13-2 second-half start for Penn College, with Cooper and Rees Watkins supplying the bulk of the offense, tied the game at 46 with 14:20 left, and it was tied at 49 and 52 before the Wildcats went back on top by three on a trey by Livingston Cross. The teams tied again at 57, 60, and 61 with 4:34 showing before St. Mary's used a 12-6 finish to win by six.
Inside the box: Watkins ended with 17 points to lead Penn College, Cooper scored 16 and Gavin Barrett added 11.
Micah Henry topped the Seahawks with a game-high 27 points as St. Mary's shot 56% from the field to 36% for the Wildcats. On the plus side, Penn College connected on 17 of 21 foul shots (81%). St. Mary's led in fast-break points, 21-12, and in points in the paint, 48-28.
