Cory finishes 1-2 at NCAA Championships

ROANOKE, Va. – Isaac Cory went 1-2 on the first day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Friday in Roanoke, Va. Cory won his preliminary bout to start the day before dropping his next two to end his season.

Following a scoreless first period against Alvernia's Isaac Kassis in the prelims, Cory trailed 1-0 early in the second after an escape by Kassis. Cory evened the match in the third on an escape with 1:40 left that eventually forced overtime. Cory secured the win in OT with a takedown 50 seconds into the period and advance with a 3-1 win.

Cory dropped his second match to the No. 1 seed, and defending national champion, Wisconsin Whitewater's Jaritt Shinhoster by fall in 40 seconds.

Cory took on Bridgewater's Edwin Morales in the first round of consolations. Morales took an early 6-0 lead with a takedown and four near fall points with 2:11 left in the first before Cory made it 6-1 with an escape 10 seconds later. Morales held on to his 6-1 lead at the end of the first. Cory made it 6-2 with an escape in the second before Morales picked up a pair of takedowns, and Cory two escapes, to keep Morales ahead 10-4 after the second. Morales countered Cory's shot in the third with a takedown before Cory escaped to make it 12-5 and Morales picked up another point for riding time.

Cory wrapped up his freshman season with a 18-4 record, a second-place finish at the NCAA Regionals, and was the first wrestler in program history to reach the NCAA Championships.
