MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wildcats (4-6 overall) concluded their 2023 Spring Break trip with a 4-4 record after rebounding from a pair of losses vs Catholic (7-2) and Bethany (8-3) by defeating Suffolk University 3-1 in their Myrtle finale.
Against Catholic University,
The Cardinals built a 5-0 lead through the top of the sixth before a wild pitch scored
Jacob Carles to make it 6-1. A passed ball in the seventh plated
Jake Wagner before Catholic added another run in the eighth to make it a 7-2 game.
Wagner led Penn College at the plated with three hits and a walk.
Jonas McGrath fell to 0-1 after five innings on the mound. He allowed five earned, on eight hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.
Against Bethany College,
Trailing 1-0, Brian Robinson hit an RBI single in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Robinson gave the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout to short. The lead was short lived as Riley Brendel hit a three-run home run in the bottom half of the fourth to give Bethany a 5-2 lead. Bethany scored three more runs before a Robinson solo home run in the top of the seventh trimmed the Wildcats deficit to 8-3.
The Wildcats had 11 total hits, with
Jacob Carles,
Cameron Dick and Robison all having two hits apiece.
Chance Webb (1-2) took the loss on the mound allowing eight earned runs on seven hits, while striking out eight in 5.1 innings of work.
Against Suffolk University,
Penn College plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a 1-1 pitcher's duel.
Jake Wagner gave the Wildcats a 2-1 on a hard-hit single to short that scored
Nathan Gustkey with the winning run.
Quinn Hanafin padded the Wildcat lead with an RBI double to the left center field gap.
Starting pitcher
Justin Porter allowed just one run and two hits while striking out nine batters in five innings of work.
Cole Culver came in to pitch in relief allowing no hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Zac Weaver (2-0) notched the win shutting out Suffolk in 2.2 innings pitched allowing just one hit while striking out four.
The Wildcats return to action in their United East Conference opening series with game one at Penn State Abington on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M.
