ABINGTON, PA - Penn College saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon when they lost a pair of one run games at Penn State Abington. Penn College drops to 19-7 overall and 11-3 in United East Play while Penn State Abington improves to 17-9 and 11-5 in UE.
In game one,
Jordan Specht put the Wildcats on top 1-0 in the top of the first-inning with an RBI double to right center that scored
Maddie Hurst. Tied at 1-1 in the top of the third inning Hurst and the Wildcats took the lead back on an RBI single to right that scored
Madison Shaffer. Abington would tie the score in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout. With the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh,
MacKenzie Weaver hit a one out fly ball to center that was caught and Hurst tagged up from third to give the Wildcats what they thought was a 3-2. Unfortunately, the umpires ruled Hurst left the base early and was subsequently called out on the play. The Nittany Lions carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning where they walked-off the game on an RBI single to center.
MacKenzie Weaver (10-4) took the loss in the circle allowing three runs (two earned) and nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Hurst finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and run scored.
In game two,
Penn State Abington jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play before hanging on for a 5-4 victory. Trailing 5-0 in the top of the third, the Wildcats plated two runs on a
Jordan Specht single to center. In the fifth inning Specht knocked in her third RBI of the game on a double to center to trim the Nittany Lions lead to 5-3. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the seventh and had a chance to tie the game at 5-5 with a runner on second; however, the Nittany Lions pitcher was able to get Specht to fly out to center to end the game.
Maddie Hurst and Specht ended the game with two hits a piece.
Kyla Benner (7-3) took the loss in the circle allowing five runs on one hit in one inning pitched.
Johanna Devore kept the Wildcats in it throughout the game allowing three hits and no runs in five-innings of relief.
The Wildcats return to action Friday at Lancaster Bible for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
