READING, Pa. — Penn College split a United East baseball doubleheader at Penn State Berks on Thursday, losing the first game, 3-0, and winning the second 15-4. The Wildcats now are 14-5 in the conference and 20-17 overall. PS Berks is 9-11 in the UE and 10-24 overall.
How it happened: In the opener, Berks used three doubles and a single to score all of its runs in the fifth inning against Wildcats' starting pitcher Justin Porter (2-3), while Berks' Josh Miller held Penn College to five hits, walking none and striking out nine over seven innings.
Inside the box: Cameron Dick went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Wildcats in the first game with a double in the fourth inning and Shane Price had a double in the seventh.
In game two,
The Wildcats grabbed a 2-0 first-inning lead with Shane Price and Jacob Carles each getting RBI singles. They then blew the second contest wide open with a nine-run fourth inning with singles by Brian Robison and Cameron Dick plating the first two runs, the third being walked in, Tristan Current driving in the next two with a single, a sacrifice fly by Nate Gustkey knocking in the sixth run, Tyler Rudolph plating the seventh with a single, Robison getting his second RBI of the inning after being walked, and the final run that frame scoring on a wild pitch. Carles homered to lead off the sixth inning, and Penn College added three runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Robison and a two-run single by Jake Wagner.
In the nightcap,
Wagner went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Robison went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Carles went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs scored, Current went 3 for 6 with two RBIs and one run scored and Dick went 4 for 6 with one RBI and two runs scored as Penn College pounded out 20 hits. Starting pitcher Chance Webb went five innings, striking out five, to improve to 6-2 on the mound.
