SCRANTON, Pa. — Top-seeded Penn College advanced to Saturday's title game against Marywood University in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Softball Championships with a 1-0 win on Friday over third-seed St. Elizabeth University.
After Friday's action, Penn College is 30-10 on the season, Marywood is 27-17 and St. Elizabeth is finished at 27-14.
How it happened: Hits and runs both were at a premium in the day's second contest as the game's lone run scored in the bottom of the sixth when Maddie Hurst singled, stole second, moved to third when Jordan Specht grounded out, and scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Inside the box: In the circle, Mackenzie Weaver (17-6) was magnificent for the Wildcats as she struck out 11 and walked none while giving up five hits in the seven-inning shutout. The only other Penn College hits were singles by Weaver and Skyelar Splain, and the defense was solid with no errors.
Up next: United East regular-season champ Penn College will face Atlantic East Conference runner-up Marywood at noon on Saturday. When Marywood and St. Elizabeth played in the first game on Friday, Colonial States Athletic Conference champ St. Elizabeth overcame an 0-2 deficit with five runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 win. When they met later in the day in an elimination game, Marywood prevailed, 2-1. If another game is necessary to decide the champion in the double-elimination tournament, it will be played at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
