WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Cooper Smith's penalty kick in the 74
th minute lifted Penn College to a 1-0 win over Penn State Berks in a United East men's soccer match Saturday. The Wildcats won their fourth-straight game and improved to 1-0 United East, 5-2-1 overall, while the Lions fell to 0-1, 0-4-2.
How it happened: Following a scoreless first half, a Berks penalty in the box setup Smith's PK attempt in the 74
th minute. The sophomore sent his attempt to the right side to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
Penn College sent three other shots on target in the second half, but
Logan Stapleton's header in the 58
th and back-to-back shots in the 72
nd minute from
Logan Confer and
Jacob Everhart, were turned away.
Dylan Daily nearly gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 35
th minute but his shot hit the crossbar.
Inside the box: Penn College outshot Berks, 22-5, and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Cole Catherman earned the shutout win in goal for the Wildcats.
