WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College split a nonconference softball doubleheader against Penn State Altoona Saturday. The Wildcats dropped the first game, 7-6, in eight innings before scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh in the second game to secure a 3-2 win. Penn College improved to 8-4.
In game one,
Altoona jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Wildcats scored all six of their runs in the fourth. A double by
Jesse Brumbaugh and singles from Sophia Laspina,
Madison Shaffer, and
Ivvy Morder brought in four runs, while an error, and a bases loaded walk by Maggie Mangene gave the Wildcats a 6-3 lead.
Altoona plated a run in the fifth and used an inside-the-park two run home run in the seventh to tie the game. The Lions took advantage of a PCT error to plate the eventual winning run in the eighth.
Grace Lorson finished with three hits for the Wildcats, while
Madison Herriman and Shaffer finished with two hits.
Mackenzie Weaver fell to 4-3 after eight innings in the circle. She allowed six earned, on 10 hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
In game two,
The Nittany Lions took a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth before Brumbaugh smacked a solo homer to left field to tie the game in the sixth. An error later in the sixth put PCT ahead 2-1 but the Lions knotted the game with a single in the top of the seventh. Mangene and Brumbaugh reached on singles to start the bottom of the seventh and an error plated Mangene for the winning run.
Brumbaugh finished with two hits to pace the Penn College offense.
Hailey DeDrody fired 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, on seven hits. Weaver relieved DeBrody in the seventh and finished off the last two outs to improve to 5-3 this season.
