Wildcats Open United East Play With Doubleheader Sweep of Harrisburg

Weaver becomes program career strikeout leader

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Penn College softball got off to a great start as the Wildcats opened United East Conference action undefeated, taking down Penn State Harrisburg, 5-4 and 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats improved to 10-4 overall (2-0 UE) while they dropped Harrisburg to 10-6 (0-2).

In game one,
Mackenzie Weaver shined in the circle and at the plate as the Wildcat ace spun a season-high 12 strikeouts and scattered six hits in the win. Her final strikeout to end the Lion's two-run seventh inning was the 333rd of her career to set a new program record. Weaver followed her pitching dominance with a walk-off three-run triple to right for the 5-4 victory.

After Harrisburg plated two runs in the second inning, Penn College battled back with a run in the fifth and sixth innings when Lexi Snyder and Madison Shaffer both hit RBI-doubles. The Lions added went up 4-2 in the top half of the seventh before the Wildcats mounted the comeback win.

In game two,
The Wildcats found themselves working from a deficit again when Harrisburg took a 1-0 lead in the second inning where the score stood until the home half of the fifth inning. Weaver started the inning with a single and two quick outs looked like the Lions would get away unscathed but the Wildcats didn't blink. Shaffer ripped a single to right and Weaver raced to third to put runners on the corner. Grace Lorson cleared the bases with a two-run double to right and Madison Herriman scored Lorson as she hit the ball in the same location and an error from the right fielder put Herriman on third.

Fayth Anderson retired the next six batters as she finished with eight strikeouts and earned the victory in the circle while Lorson led the Wildcats at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.

Up next: Penn College continues United East play with a doubleheader at Penn State Abington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
