ABINGTON, Pa. – Penn College continued its United East softball winning streak as the Wildcats claimed a softball doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington, 5-0 and 9-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats, on a five-game winning streak, advanced to 12-4 and 4-0 in United East play. Abington fell to 8-10, 2-2 UEC.
In game one,
Mackenzie Weaver tossed a no-hitter and was a hit batter away from a perfect game, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard. Weaver finished with two strikeouts to claim her eighth victory and fourth shutout of the year.
Grace Lorson led PCT at the plate with three hits and two runs scored while tacking on an RBI.
Madison Herriman,
Jesse Brumbaugh and
Madison Shaffer all added two hits and
Lexi Snyder finished with a team-high two RBIs.
Snyder put the Wildcats on the board early in the first inning on a sac fly to score Lorson who led off the game with a single. Penn College plated two runs in the third innings with a pair of RBI singles by Herriman and Snyder. In the sixth,
Sofia LaSpina roped a triple to center field and later scored on a Lorson single to make it 4-0 and the final run came two batters later with Lorson scoring on an error.
In game two,
Fayth Anderson continued the strong pitching as she scattered just four hits and struck out eight in the five-inning complete game. Maggie Mangene went 3-3 with three RBIs while
Madison Herriman and
Lexi Snyder both went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Wildcats were quick to get on the board again in the first inning with Snyder driving in Herriman on an RBI single. Mangne added the second run in the fourth inning with an RBI double to score LaSpina. A six-run fifth inning ended the game early as Weaver hit an RBI single to score SNyder, Mangene added to her RBI total with a two-run single followed by a pair of RBI singles off the bats of Shaffer and Herriman for an 8-1 lead. Snyder capped the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice to score Lorson from second base.
Up next: The Wildcats visit Elmira on Tuesday to play the final nonconference opponent of the season with a doubleheader slated for 3 p.m.
