Penn College splits with Cairn

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College split a nonconference baseball doubleheader against Cairn University Tuesday. The Wildcats dropped the first game, 6-4, before winning the nightcap, 13-5, to improve to 7-11.

In game one,
Penn College took an early 2-0 lead when Jaydon Goebel's single, and an error, brought in a pair of runs. Cairn added three in the top of the third before Adam Aldenderfer tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a single to right. The Wildcats went ahead, 4-3, on Shawn Townsend's single to center in the fourth before the Highlanders took the lead for good with three in the sixth.

Jaiden Augustine and Quinn Hanafin led PCT with two hits. Griffin Vollman started the game and fired five innings, allowing three earned, on four hits, with three strikeouts, and four walks. Dennis Prestash fell to 1-1 after two innings in relief.

In game two,
An Eckard sacrifice and Hanafin's single gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Cairn added one in the top of the second. Penn College took advantage of a two-out error in the bottom of the second with seven runs. Townsend was hit with the bases loaded, an error plated three more runs, and Goebel cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right to give Penn College a 9-1 lead.

The Wildcats added two in the fourth with RBIs by Goebel and Hanafin to increase the lead to 11-1. The Highlanders scored four in the fifth to get within six, 11-5. An error and Matt Munoz' single in the fifth scored Penn College's final two runs.

Hanafin and Goebel both finished with two hits, while Goebel batted in a game-high four runs. Gabe Reptsik improved to 1-0 after 4.1 innings on the bump. He allowed two earned, with two strikeouts, and two walks.

Up next: Penn College returns to action Thursday, 3:30 p.m., at Wilkes.
