Penn College Drops Wilkes, 9-3

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Penn College baseball defeated Wilkes, 9-3 in nonconference baseball action on Thursday. The Wildcats improved to 8-11 on the season, the Colonels dropped to 15-4.

How it happened: The Wildcats batted around in the top of the first inning to plate seven runs and never looked back to hand the Colonels just their fourth loss of the season. Penn College saw its first five batters reach base as Dallas Griess started the game off with a leadoff double and scored on a Jaiden Augustine single, Shawn Townsend reached on an error and Adam Aldenderfer walked to load the bases. Quinn Hanafin reached on an infield single that scored Augustine and Townsend and Aldenderfer scored on a Matt Munoz groundout for a 4-0 lead.

Brandon Shane and Jaydon Goebel continued the first inning with back-to-back singles to load the bases and John Croasdale forced an RBI walk for the 5-0 lead and forced Wilkes into a pitching change. Shane and Goebel later scored on wild pitches as the Wildcats scored the most runs in a single-inning this season.

The Wildcats added a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings on a Matt Munoz RBI-double and an Aldenderfer RBI-single, respectively.

Jason Cute and Jonas McGrath combined for six scoreless innings on the mound as both went three innings with just two hits and seven combined strikeouts to keep the Colonels off the board until the seventh inning.

Inside the box: Aldenderfer and Hanafin both went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate, Aldenderfer added two runs and Hananfin scored once. Mason Balfanz tossed the final three innings for the save while striking out four.

Up next: Penn College has the weekend off before heading to Elmira on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
