Wildcats split with Berks; Brumbaugh hits walk-off in nightcap

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College split a United East softball doubleheader against Penn State Berks Saturday and improved to 10-4 United East, 20-8 overall. The Wildcats dropped the first game 4-1 before winning the nightcap 5-4.

In game one,
Maggie Mangene's single to center in the third plated Madison Shaffer to give PCT a 1-0 lead. Berks later answered with four unearned in the sixth.

Four players picked up a hit for Penn College, while Mackenzie Weaver fell to 10-6 in the circle, after allowing four unearned, on five hits, with eight strikeouts, and no walks.

In game two,
Jesse Brumbaugh hit a walk-off single to center to plate Grace Lorson and break a 4-4 deadlock. Mangene gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run single to left before Berks tied the game with a run in the third and fifth. Lorson put the Wildcats ahead 3-2 after she smacked a solo shot to left in the fifth and Shaffer made it 4-2 on a double to left in the sixth. Berks tied the game in the top of seventh on two-out two-run single.

Mangene, Lorson, and Shaffer all picked up two hits for Penn College. Fayth Anderson improved to 9-2 after surrendering two earned, on seven hits, with five strikeouts.

Up next: Penn College returns to action Monday, 3 p.m., hosting Lancaster Bible.
