LANCASTER, Pa. --- Penn College split a United East softball doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College Saturday. The Wildcats cruised to an 18-4 win in the first game before the Chargers used an eighth inning walk-off double in the nightcap to secure a 9-8 victory. Penn College finished the regular season at 15-5 United East, 23-9 overall, while LBC finished at 6-14, 14-23.
Penn College's playoff seed will be determined based off of the results of Sunday's doubleheader between Penn State Harrisburg (13-5 UE) and Penn State Abington (11-7 UE). The Wildcats can clinch their fourth-straight No. 1 seed with a Harrisburg loss, however, Harrisburg could earn the No. 1 seed in the Volt Division with a sweep of Abington. Harrisburg and Penn College are 2-2 against each other this season, while Harrisburg holds the second tiebreaker (run differential in games between two tied teams) by outscoring PCT, 13-10, in those four contests.
In game one,
The Wildcats jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first inning and made it 7-0 after the top of the second. After Lancaster Bible scored three in the bottom of the second, Penn College exploded with nine in the third and tacked on two in the fifth.
Madison Shaffer finished 4 for 4, with three RBI on two triples, a double, and a single.
Madison Herriman and
Ivvy Morder both picked up three hits, while Herriman (2),
Mackenzie Weaver (3),
Lexi Snyder (2), and
Jesse Brumbaugh (2) joined Shaffer with multiple RBI.
Weaver improved to 13-6 after allowing four earned, on five hits, with four strikeouts, and three walks.
In game two,
After the Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Maggie Mangene tied the game with a double in the third, and Shaffer made it 2-1 with a double in the fourth. LBC tied the game in the fourth before a triple from
Lexi Snyder, and a double by Weaver, made it 4-2 in the fifth. The Chargers forced extra innings with two runs in the seventh.
Penn College scored four runs in the top of the eighth on a single from
Hailey DeBrody, doubles from Shaffer and Herriman, and an error to take an 8-4 lead. LBC used three run-scoring doubles in the bottom of eighth to plate five runs.
Herriman and Shaffer both picked up three hits for Penn College and Mangene and
Sofia LaSpina finished with a pair.
Fayth Anderson fired seven innings, allowing four earned, on eight hits, with five strikeouts, and four walks, while Weaver fell to 13-7 after two-thirds of an inning, allowing two earned, on two hits, with two strikeouts, and one walk.
