BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Penn College was edged by Moravian University, 2-1, in eight innings in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Softball Moravian Regional Thursday. The Wildcats fell to 30-11, while the Greyhounds improved to 31-8.
Penn College, seeded No. 4 in the bracket, will face No. 2 Roanoke in Friday's 1:30 p.m. elimination game, while No. 1 Moravian takes on No. 3 Muskingum in the 11 a.m. semifinal. The losers of Friday's first two contests will play in a final elimination game at 4 p.m.
The Greyhounds struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Penn College answered in the top of the fourth when
Madison Herriman picked up PCT's first hit with a single to right. Maggie Mangene's sacrifice bunt moved Herriman to second and
Grace Lorson's grounder to second advanced Herriman to third.
Mackenzie Weaver helped herself with an RBI single to right center to plate Herriman and tied the game at 1-1.
Penn College stranded a runner in scoring position in the fifth before forcing the Greyhounds to strand runners at second and third, in the bottom of the seventh inning, to force extra innings.
Madison Shaffer led off the top of the eighth with a single to right, but Moravian retired the next three batters. The Greyhounds led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and a stolen base to begin the inning with a runner at second. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third before a one-out fielder's choice scored the winning run for the Greyhounds.
Herriman led Penn College with two hits, and a run scored, while Weaver, Shaffer, and
Hailey DeBrody each picked up a hit. Weaver fell to 16-9 after 7.1 innings in the circle. She allowed two earned runs, on five hits, with four strikeouts, and one walk.
