WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Gavin Barrett's buzzer-beating layup fell just short as Penn College dropped a 69-67 decision against Saint Elizabeth in a United East men's basketball game Saturday. The Eagles and Wildcat both sit a 3-3 UE, 5-10 overall.
How it happened: The Wildcats and Eagles played through six ties in the first nine minutes of action before Saint Elizabeth went on a 12-3 run to gain a 10-point lead, 27-17 at the 7:42 mark. Barrett stalled the run with a pair of free throws and
Julien Leveille cashed in on an old-fashioned three-point play to get the Wildcats within five.
Livingston Cross drained a bucket to get within two, 31-29 with 2:30 until the half but Saint Elizabeth closed out the first frame with a 38-32 lead.
In the second half, Penn College quickly reeled in the Eagles with layups from
Ronn Flood, Jr., Barrett and
Michael Woolridge and a 3-pointer from
Christian Chandler. Barrett's layup at the 15-minute mark pulled the Wildcats ahead, 43-42 and added another point following an Eagles foul. The Wildcats mounted an 11-point spread, 65-54, across the ensuing nine minutes capped by a pair of free throws from Cross with six minutes to play. Saint Elizabeth chased down the Wildcat lead until a three put the away team up, 67-65 with two minutes remaining. Barrett drove through traffic with 23 seconds to tie the game at 67-67 before The Eagles got the final basket to fall with four seconds left.
Inside the box: Cross became the 10th Wildcat in program history to surpass the 1,000 career point mark. He finished with 20 points to place him at 1,005 career points while grabbing 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double effort of the season.
Barrett nearly completed a triple-double effort with a team-high 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Michael Woolridge added nine points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Up next: Penn College returns to action Tuesday, 7 p.m., at Rosemont.
