NEW YORK, N.Y. — Saturday night in the NY-PA Challenge at New York University, Penn College's wrestling team finished 2-1 and improved to 6-1 in duals for the season. The Wildcats topped Merchant Marine, 39-12, and Hunter College, 54-5, before losing to host NYU, 36-14.
Individually for Penn College: Carter Davis at 165 pounds, Nicholas Woodruff at 197 and Nicholai Brotzman at 285 all went unbeaten in their three bouts. Blake Dergham (133), Isaac McGregor (141) and Travis Green (174) ended 2-1.
How it happened vs. Merchant Marine: Eight Wildcats came through with points as Woodruff and Green won by falls, Brotzman and Justin Adams (125) won by forfeits, McGregor, David M'Balla (149) and Davis won major decisions, and Dergham won by decision.
How it happened vs. Hunter College: Penn College captured nine of the 10 bouts with Brotzman, Woodruff, Green, Davis, Cavin Napoletano (157), McGregor and Dergham scoring falls, and Luke Heimbach (125) and Cole Shupp (184) adding wins by forfeit.
How it happened vs. NYU: Held scoreless through the first five bouts, Davis got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a win by a major decision at 165, Woodruff followed with another major decision at 197, and Brotzman capped the match and scoring with a fall in 1:11 against Evan Anderson who is ranked third in NWCA Region 3 at heavyweight.
